Don’t Let The Piano Move Stress You

Weight is the obvious part — uprights run 130 to 180 kg and grands can exceed 450 kg. The parts people underestimate are what actually cause damage. The weight is unevenly distributed, sitting over the keyboard end and the plate, so lifting wrong means it doesn’t tip gradually, it goes suddenly.
The legs and pedal lyre are structural but fragile: on a grand they’re designed to hold weight vertically, not to be dragged or knocked laterally, and a leg shearing at the block is where most amateur piano damage happens. Internally, the soundboard, plate and 200-plus strings sit under enormous combined tension, and sharp impacts can affect the bridge or crack a soundboard — damage you may not discover until it’s tuned.
Uprights go on a piano dolly with the keyboard side protected, blanket-wrapped and strapped, and onto a piano board with two to four movers for stairs. Grands come apart properly: lid closed and locked, pedal lyre removed, legs removed one at a time as the instrument is lowered onto a padded skid board, then wrapped and strapped on its straight side. Reassembly is the same sequence in reverse.
Most of the difficulty is the route, not the instrument. Before quoting we want to know the number of steps and whether there’s a turn or landing, doorway widths on the path, whether there’s a bookable elevator, and in winter whether the walkway will be iced. Send a couple of photos with your quote request. Afterwards, wait two to four weeks before tuning so the instrument acclimatizes — tuning the day after a move means paying for it twice.
Frequently Asked Questions
Piano moves are quoted flat rather than hourly, and depend on the instrument, stairs and access. An upright with straight ground-floor access sits at the lower end; a grand down a flight of stairs at the upper. Moving it as part of a full house move costs less than a standalone booking.
Yes. Grands are moved by removing the pedal lyre and legs, lowering the instrument onto a padded skid board, and controlling it down the flight with three to four movers. Send photos of the stairwell when you request a quote — the turn at the landing matters more than the number of steps.
Yes, always. Pianos react to changes in temperature and humidity, not just to being moved. Wait two to four weeks so the instrument settles into its new room before booking a tuner, otherwise you’ll pay for a second tuning.
Yes. Pool tables are disassembled, since slate comes off separately and a one-inch slate bed can weigh 180 kg per section. Church and console organs vary widely — call us with the make and model.
Calgary Professional Movers Inc. is licensed, bonded and insured, and accidental damage on moving day is covered. For a high-value instrument, tell us the make, model and value when booking so declared-value coverage can be arranged.
Yes, in a climate-controlled unit — which is what a piano needs in Calgary. Standard and even heated units don’t hold humidity stable, and it’s the freeze-thaw humidity swing that damages soundboards and veneer.
