Junk Removal That Makes Moving Lighter and Cheaper

The cheapest thing you can do before a move is get rid of what you’re not keeping. Every box we carry is billable, and people routinely pay to transport furniture they throw out six weeks later. Walk the house before your move and be honest about the basement, the garage and the spare room. If it hasn’t been used since the last move, it probably isn’t coming to the next one.

We take furniture, appliances, electronics and e-waste, renovation debris, yard waste, general household clutter and full estate or garage contents. We can’t take hazardous waste (paint, solvents, oils, chemicals, propane tanks) or asbestos-containing materials, tyres in quantity, or medical waste. The City of Calgary’s landfill sites accept most household hazardous waste.

Not everything is garbage, and treating it as such is wasteful and more expensive for you. Furniture in usable condition and working appliances go to donation. Metals, electronics, cardboard and clean wood are recycled. Only what genuinely has no other route is landfilled. Ask us to prioritise donation if that matters to you. It sometimes takes an extra stop and we’re happy to do it.

A large share of this work is estate clearance, often for a family sorting a parent’s home under time pressure. We work at whatever pace suits: family walks through and tags what’s being kept, we handle everything else, and where a house has to be emptied for a possession date we can do it in stages so nobody’s making decisions at 9pm the night before.

Clearing Before You Move Is Cheaper Than Moving It Twice

The cheapest item to move is the one you do not move. On an hourly move, every box of things you will never unpack is billed twice, once onto the truck and once off it, plus the space it takes in your new home.

The categories worth being decisive about are predictable. Furniture that does not fit the new floor plan. The second-bedroom filing you digitised years ago. Exercise equipment being used as a clothes rail. Paint tins and cleaning chemicals, which we are not permitted to put on a moving truck anyway. The contents of the garage nobody has opened since the last move.

Doing a clear-out a week before moving day, rather than on it, is what makes this work. Decisions made under time pressure on moving morning, with a crew waiting, are both expensive and bad.

Where It Actually Goes and What We Cannot Take

Junk removal that sends everything to landfill is the easy version. Sorting takes longer and is the difference between clearing a house and dumping one.

Usable furniture, appliances and household goods go to donation where a charity will genuinely take them, which is not everything, as most Calgary charities will decline mattresses, upholstered items with damage, and older non-certified electronics. Metal goes for scrap. Electronics go to an Alberta Recycling depot under the provincial programme. Cardboard and clean wood go to recycling. What is genuinely waste goes to landfill, and on a typical clear-out that is a smaller share than people expect.

What we cannot take, on any job: hazardous waste, which covers paint, solvents, motor oil, propane tanks, pesticides and asbestos-containing material. These have dedicated City of Calgary drop-off streams and no legitimate hauler will put them on a truck. Ask before the day if you are unsure about something, and we will tell you where it needs to go instead.

FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions

A.

It’s priced by the volume you actually have rather than a flat call-out, so a couple of items costs considerably less than a garage clear-out. Booking it alongside a move is cheaper than a standalone visit, because the crew and truck are already scheduled.

A.

Hazardous waste (paint, solvents, oils, chemicals, propane tanks) plus asbestos-containing material, quantities of tyres, and medical or biological waste. The City of Calgary’s landfill sites accept most household hazardous waste. Send a photo if you’re unsure.

A.

Yes, wherever we can. Furniture in usable condition and working appliances go to donation rather than landfill, and metals, electronics and clean wood are recycled. Tell us if prioritising donation matters to you and we’ll route things accordingly.

A.

Yes. Full estate and downsizing clear-outs are a regular part of our work, and we can stage them over several days so a family isn’t forced to make decisions all at once. Items being kept can go straight into the move or into storage.

A.

For a full clear-out, someone should walk through with the crew at the start to confirm what’s going and what’s staying. After that you don’t need to stay. For a straightforward furniture pickup, arranged access is enough.

A.

Better to do it the day before. That way the crew arrives to a house containing only what’s actually moving, which shortens the move and reduces what you’re billed for carrying.

A.

Yes. These need a walkthrough first, because volume, access and sorting time vary enormously and an estimate over the phone would not be honest. We work through them room by room and separate donation, recycling and waste as we go.
